This building muscle guide illustrates the
differences between various types of weight training. Many people use these terms
interchangeably when they talk about
lifting weights to physically enhance their bodies, but each term
has a completely different meaning - and the specific workout approach
taken - than the others. If you are really interested in enhancing
your body in any way using weights, please read on.
Bodybuilding is a competitive sport that is based on building and
developing muscle mass for show. The primary objective is to impress
the judges by attaining a certain muscular look overall. As you would
guess, building muscle mass in many of the body's areas is key, but
also important is the bodybuilders' ability to minimize body fat. Here
is an example of one of the more famous competitive bodybuilders of
our time (you may recognize him!).
When you compare bodybuilding to power lifting, the objectives are
very different. Power lifting is simply about developing the muscle
mass and strength needed to lift as much dead weight as possible. In
this case, it's all about the power, not the looks! Although power
lifting is also a competitive sport, that's pretty much where the
similarities end. As you can see, the effects on the body are very
different, as are the techniques and diets used to achieve them.
Strength training, on the other hand, is a particular type of workout
regimen that focuses on the use of lighter weights to achieve a more
natural, 'buffed' type of personal appearance. You'll frequently find
strength training to be just one part of someone's overall fitness
program. It also focuses on the effect that this natural 'toning' has
on the general health and well-being of the practitioner.
Other factors that also help distinguish between bodybuilding, power
lifting, and strength training would include diet, use of nutritional
supplements, the types and frequencies of exercises employed, and your
level of commitment to them.
This building muscle guide, then, is primarily intended for anyone
interested in strength training as a part of their overall health and
fitness program. Here, you'll find other articles and product reviews
that can help you with your own strength conditioning efforts. (You
